This particular study sought to determine the most effective treatment option for athletes suffering from back pain. The researchers assessed the results of the following common treatments (strap in for a long list):
- Application of Heat/Cold
- Ultrasound and Laser Treatments
- Electrical Nerve Stimulation
- Back Braces/Lumbar Support
- Exercise Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Steroid and non-steroid anti-inflammatory Medications
- Muscle Relaxants
- Injection therapy
The results were unsurprising (to us at least!). Chiropractic spinal adjustments showed the most significant benefit and had the lowest risk of side effects. Runners up in the efficacy department was the application of external heat, skeletal muscle relaxants, and non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication.
